I decided to blog about this after watching the movie 300 which talks about Spartan King Leonidas and his 300 Spartans fight to the last man against Persian. Of cos there was not much about women appearing nude in the movie but rather I got more information on the Spartan society from Wiki. It appear Spartan was a very interesting group with facts I felt that are lacking in today society. I am not talking about changing the world into a militarist world but things like loyalty, trust and equality between the sexes.

What I will be sharing with you guys (especially those who did not watch this movie) is the part of how Spartan women share almost equal or not full right as the men. Spartan women enjoyed a status, power and respect that was unknown in the rest of the classical world. They controlled their own properties, as well as the properties of male relatives who were away with the army. It is estimated that women were the sole owners of at least 35% of all land and property in Sparta. Spartan women received as much education as men, as well as a substantial amount of physical education and gymnastic training. They rarely got married before the age of 20, and unlike Athenian women who wore heavy, concealing clothes and were rarely seen outside the house, Spartan women wore short dresses and went where they pleased. It was possible for them to appear entirely nude even publicly, which they did customarily only at festivals, as did the men.

Seem like way before our time Women and Men had once stood on equal grounds in Sparta. Considering this one will wonder why is it that such rights need to be fought for in today society? Why can't this traditional rule on equality between Men and Women be passed down?

I dun really know but I can imagine if really one day where Men and Women can really stand on equal ground again even in Singapore it will help to push Singapore into greater heights.
